5 out of 5 stars True Redemption of the Transformers franchise   August 25, 2010
Pam Richards (Tucson AZ USA)
Being a Transformers fan for quite some time I was thrilled to find that not only was a PS3 game for Transformers coming out, but it wasn't based off of the perverted and dark franchise that Micheal Bay created to destroy our childrens hearts. After playing this game, I feel that not only has the series redeemed itself in my heart, but has brought G1 to a whole new level. Very good graphics and excellent story, this game is perfect for those looking to remember when transformers was still awesome but also those trying to start a new hobbie altogether. If transformers is your childhood dream, this game brings it to a whole new level.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful game, great for Transformers fans, but with many bugs.   August 25, 2010
Anja Rebekka Schultze (Norway)
I am a long time Transformers fan and I had really been looking forward to this game. Me and my hubby have just played through the story mode of the game and started exploring the multilayer portion. All in all I am very pleased with the game though it do also have some serious issues.

First of all this game is set in the G1 time line, it has nothing to do with the movies, which is a good thing. Not that the Transformers movies are bad but it is nice to see the old characters presented the way I rememberer them from my childhood. There is unbelievable amount of reference to the original G1 material in this game which makes it a treat for fans, though be aware that the game do take some liberties with the Transformers setting and characters. This game is set during the war on Cybertron, also it is set over 4 million years ago before the Transformers crashed the Ark on Earth. The story mode, or campaign mode is great, it tells a interesting story about the war and is quite good, only problem is that it is rather short.

The Campaign mode has ten chapters five for the Autobots and five for the Decepticons. It is good and rather interesting but far to short, there should have been at least ten chapters for each faction. This game is mainly a multilayer game, it has several different modes from team play, to all out war to survival mode, one can even meet up with some other players and play through the campaign mode together. However the multiplayer plagued by bugs, something that is rather common in the game at large, two times while playing through our PS# froze and we had to restart it, and the machine is not three months old.

The graphics of this game is beautiful. Yes the landscape of Cyberstron can be a bit repetitive, however it is a machine world and the game designers have stayed very true to the descriptions of Cyberstron in the comics and cartoons. The robots look amazing and I wish they would have done the same for the movies as they did in this game, the character design is upgraded and do not look cartoony however they are still easy to recognize for fans and are not just a mess of metal and fancy animated blank thingies as in the movies. I can not say anything than that the game look just amazing.

I would give this game 3 of 5, it is a good game but with serious flaws and a to short story mode, it fails to rise above the mass of first person action games out there. However I will give the game an extra star for the huge amounts of fan material that is put in the game. A Transformers fan can not help but love this game, despite of the flaws. However had this not been Transformers it would be a rather mediocre action game.

2 out of 5 stars Die hard fans only   August 24, 2010

This game really isn't that great. It's a pretty typical game. The story mode, is pretty short, the story itself, not that epic or wonderful. Really, it feels drawn out, and game play mechanics repetitive and for a roughly 10 hour story mode, that's not a good thing at all. I wouldn't be so harsh on it if had more diversity and a better story. If you're a fan, you'll appreciate the little things. It does feel like a transformers video game, but that's about it.

The multiplayer (online only) suffers the same issues. It's repetitive. There's not much to do online. The different styles are there. Defend this area, or plant the bomb, so on. Still, the idea is you kill other players, and get experience points and level up, and expand your character. I dont see the point though. It's kind of fun, but, not enough. The only thing to do with a high level character is fight some more. Thing is, you don't need to be high level to beat people, it's balanced in this way that if you're level 1, you can take out a level 25 (the cap)
The connection problems are the worst. I am not alone in this. You will randomly get dropped from a match, and all exp you earned will be lost. While the game tells you that you're gaining experience and leveling up in a match, you don't collect it till the end. So, if you disconnect, you're out of luck.
There's this esclation mode, which pits you and some allies against wave after wave of NPCs. There's no reward for doing this though. Which, I find bothersome. If the same experience system carried over into this gameplay, I'd have been more inclined to keep playing. You use premade characters, the ones from the show, with pre-selected abilities, no customization.
Where as in the PvP multiplayer, you can customize your character. The color options are limited, but, probably to keep the factions looking different.
I think it was a mistake not allowing you to look like characters in their original colors in PvP, and not being able to customize characters in the co-op wave battles.
It's like the people that made this game weren't on the same page. There's alot of room for improvement in all areas.
Also, if you don't buy the download pack, you may find yourself getting booted before matches, because those maps will come up, and they won't get vetoed. So, they'll get another 10 dollars out of you that way.

I really can't recommend this game unless your a big transformers fan, which I am. As a gamer, pass, pass pass, this is not a good game. I'd rather spend my time playing red dead redemption, which offers everything this game offers and more. I'm glad I got this on amazon on sale, which helped make up for the download pack I was pretty much forced to buy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME!!!   August 21, 2010

This is the best shooter game I've played in a long time. Once I played through the campaign and joined in on the multiplayer, I was hooked. Whoever rates this game as no good is definitely smoking something. If you don't own Transformers: WFC, then I recommend you buy it today. It is worth every cent.

4 out of 5 stars Solidly entertaining.   August 21, 2010

The campaign mode is relatively brief, but the option of playing it co-op with one or two friends makes it far more fun than it would otherwise be. But even as a single-player action shooter, it stands a notch above average by virtue of the fact that your character can transform into vehicles of one variety or another. There is one sequence that you play as a jet, so the game takes on aspects of aerial combat, and another sequence played as a (speedy) hover car, so you get aspects of a racing game. Everything is third-person perspective, but the mechanics are fluid and responsive - meaning your character doesn't freeze in place while targeting like, say, Resident Evil. There's also a sort of mini-game you play in the course of the campaign where you seek out and destroy icons of the Autobots and Deceptacons; many of these are well hidden, so it makes for an interesting search-and-destroy mission-within-a-mission.

The online multiplayer offers the usual game choices - Team Deathmatch, etc. - with some vaguely intriguing variations. One such requires teams of players to acquire a bomb, transport it behind enemy lines, plant it inside enemy "headquarters" and then defend it until detonation. The best online feature, however, is probably the Escalation mode, which allows teams to battle successively more difficult waves of AI enemies. And believe me, by Level 8 or 9, it becomes nearly impossible to survive the onslaught. Fun to try, though. Overall, Transformers: War For Cybertron is a solidly entertaining action shooter that is well worth playing.
